flood clean-up, goodna – Jan 17, 2011

hi all … sorry for the lack of bloggage since the 11th. it’s been insane, is all i can say. work, i mean. the gold coast may have escaped unscathed, but at goldcoast.com.au and the gold coast bulletin we’ve been going full-bore at it.

today was my first day off in a while and i spent it with 150 other Gold Coasters, Dean Gould, the editor of the Bully, Lucy Ardern, chief reporter and another reporter and photographer. we headed up to goodna — one of the poorest, worst-hit areas of brisbane.

it was unbelievable. not just how high the water came, but also the level of destruction in low-lying areas. everything’s had a few days’ baking sun on it so the mud situation was a different kind of filthy and smelly. but still … filthy and smelly. we cleaned up a park, helped a couple of little old ladies empty out a flooded shed that contained about 50 years’ worth of personal belongings.

amongst the 150 were the Gold Coast Titans’ first-grade squad — Scott Prince, Luke Bailey, Clinton Toopi, Kevin Gordon, Ash Harrison, Mark Minichello (outfit of the day, see below), Preston Campbell, Greg Bird, coach John Cartwright, assistant coach Trevor Gillmeister — and a whole bunch more. they were great. they wanted nothing more than to get in and do, and let me tell ya, these guys are big — they shift a lot in a short time.

bottom line — i stink. but that’s all good.

road trip! tugun, greenmount, snapper rocks and duranbah

looking north to surfers paradise from tugun

last week i got misled to duranbah the little village in the hinterland. this week i actually made it to the beach. when snapper rocks and d’bah are at their best i swear there’s no better surfing venue in the world. today, not so much. but still, it’s been a while since i ventured to the southern reaches of my home town. so it was good to see them.

also, lizards.

you can see the full set of pics over at my Flickr photostream.
