malaysia bans ‘bruno’: ‘too much sex’

what a surprise. not. this from afp:

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 AFP – Muslim-majority Malaysia has banned British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s raunchy comedy Bruno because it contains “a lot of sex,” a senior official says.

The film, which stars Cohen as a gay Austrian fashionista, has been a box office hit in some countries while being banned elsewhere for over-the-top scenes including sex acts and full-frontal nudity.

“The movie has been banned in Malaysia because of the sexual content. It was decided by a three-man committee. (There is) a lot of sex in it,” an official with the National Film Censorship Board told AFP on Tuesday.

He said the panel judges movies based on whether they feature violence, horror, sex or counter-cultural themes.

“In the case of Bruno, the ban is based on its sex and counter-culture content,” he said on condition of anonymity.

Following the same format as his 2006 movie Borat, Cohen’s character travels to the United States where bizarre scenarios unfold including one where he mimes sexual activity while visiting a medium.

Other controversial scenes include Bruno and his boyfriend engaged in sexual acts and couples having sex at a swingers’ party.

Borat was also banned in Malaysia, a conservative country with a multicultural population including 60 per cent Muslim Malays.

Since last year alone, Malaysia has banned five movies, the most recent being US horror film Halloween II, written and directed by Rob Zombie.

the atmosphere in america …

blogkennedyjfk… scares the crap out of me right now. the extreme right of the country had managed to corrall more than its fair share of the mass media, and is successfully, it seems to me, generating a lot of hate and rage which isn’t being countered by a white house which seems hell-bent on not pissing anyone off.

one of these days they’re going to realise that they’re going to piss people off JUST BY BEING IN THE WHITE HOUSE. a black man in the white house. unheard of.

reminds me of john f kennedy in so many bad ways. a catholic in the white house. unheard of.

i don’t believe moderate republicans believe any of the hateful claptrap the ann coulters, and the glenn becks and the rush limbaughs and the sean hannitys are spewing.

but the fact that they perceive that it suits them politically to have people showing up to president obama’s public events wearing guns and bearing signs calling for bloodshed and revolution, tells me that while they may not be extremists, they are evil.

evil for using the creation of an atmosphere of hate for their own devices.

john mccain was touted as a middle of the road republican, hated by his own right wing. where is this great moderate now? where is he now that the party needs a moderate, sane voice calming things down? he’s nowhere, that’s where he is. sitting back and watching the hate simmer.

truthout is carrying a media matters piece by eric boehlert, which says it way better than i ever could. here’s an extract:

Today, conservatives are expressing outrage that Rep. Nancy Pelosi had the nerve to raise concerns about the onrush of violent political rhetoric. The Noise Machine claims it has no idea what Pelosi’s talking about. But the truth is, America’s most famous bouts of political violence (i.e. JFK, Oklahoma City, etc.) have always been accompanied by waves of radical, right-wing rhetoric. Given that history, the GOP’s insistence that the hate now filling the streets couldn’t possibly inspire violence seems woefully naive.

not naive, in my opinion. deeply deliberate and evil, more like it.

you can read the whole of eric boehlert’s piece here. it’s well worth it.
